A deep, immersive 21 day retreat and “Master Plant Dieta" shamanic apprenticeship within the ancestral spirit medicine tradition of the Amazonian Shipibo culture.

Mokan Rate Center in the Amazon Jungle of Iquitos, Peru.

24th November - 16th December
(21 days)

Master Plant Dieta, or Sama, is a shamanic apprenticeship within the ancestral spirit medicine tradition of the Amazonian Shipibo culture. Sama is the practice of cultivating a relationship with the spirits of plants — weaving a thread of connection through which their teachings and transmissions may be received. Within Shipibo cosmology, the world is understood as animistic. Nature is recognized as sentient, multidimensional, and alive — an intelligence capable of relationship. The ancient commitment to Sama is a deep crossing of the threshold into both inner and outer wilderness. It is an intentional retreat into a sacred container of spaciousness, silence, and solitude —conditions that allow for this relationship with the consciousness of these elevated plant spirits to be birthed.

A journey of deep self-exploration and inquiry. It is a prayerful communion with the mysterious and wild forces of nature, seeking teachings, visions, songs, and insights that can be carried back into community for healing, clarity, and deeper meaning. It is a portal from ego to heart. A process of emotional and spiritual maturation. An opportunity to cleanse perception, revitalize the spirit, deepen mindfulness and embody prayer. Through this practice, we begin to dissolve conditioned mental constructs and deeply rooted patterns. The heart and intuitive capacities are strengthened, allowing us to remember our truth and reconnect with the essence of the soul.

Maestro Don Rono Lopez was born in the native Shipibo community of Roaboya and was immersed in the ceremonial traditions of his lineage from early childhood. At nine years old, he attended ceremonies led by his greatgrandfather and was deeply moved by the sacred icaros. At twelve years old, he had committed to the path of curanderismo after his grandfather told him that to walk this path he must diet. He began his first dieta at thirteen with Chaikoni Rao, followed by further initiations through challenging periods of physical illness and disease, curing himself with powerful master plants including Ajo Quiro and, later, Noya Rao — the Tree of Light — an enlightened plant spirit tree that remains the central foundation of his lineage and work today.
Despite the early physical challenges in his life and the passing of his grandfather, Rono continued his training with dedication, working independently as a healer by nineteen and later serving his community alongside his brother Don Enrique Lopez, working at Riosbo for over a decade, before founding his own center, Mokan Rate, meaning “Traditional Medicine of the Ancestors.”
At Mokan Rate Center, rooted in the Shipibo tradition, he guides authentic plant dietas with integrity and care, transmitting ancestral knowledge through ceremony, treatment, the icaros, the language and the living wisdom of the master plants — including Noya Rao, supported by Bobinsana, Chullachaqui, Chiric Sanango, and Marusa — each carrying its own distinct spiritual medicine and teachings.

Mokan Rate “Traditional Medicine of the Ancestors” is an indigenous Healing sanctuary and School of spiritual studies, that welcomes students of the Shipibo lineage and the “curanderismo” practice, where one can apprentice under the guidance of the Maestro, in the ancient shamanic practice of “Dieta”.
The retreat center is 3 hours outside of the city of Iquitos, Peru, secluded in the Amazon Jungle. You will stay in your own private Tambo (Jungle hut) for the entire duration of the Dieta. The ayahuasca ceremonies are spaced out, taking place every other night, in the Maloka - the Healing temple. Mokan Rate is a big piece of land, teeming with Noya Rao, Chullachaqui Bobinsana, Marusa, Chiric Sanango the rest of the Master Plants, and is surrounded by beautiful jungle, big trees, exotic plants and wildlife.
There are small hikes and well maintained paths leading through the jungle for you to wander and explore. Maestro Rono works with a team of night guards, jungle guides and workers, who look after the land, protecting and maintain the safety and security of the participants.

This offering explores the role of song, vibration, pattern, and intention in shaping our inner and outer reality. Through voice activation, intuitive vocal expression, and ceremonial practices, participants are guided to reconnect with their voice as a powerful tool for healing, creativity, and spiritual connection.
We work with the voice as medicine—moving beyond performance into authentic, heart-centered expression. By cultivating awareness of the body, breath, and intention, participants learn to access and trust their natural voice.
A central focus of this work is using sound, song, and prayer as tools for communication with the subtle realms, including plant spirit consciousness. Through guided practices, participants are supported in opening as channels, allowing sound to emerge intuitively in relationship with the energetic field. This process supports the transmutation of emotional states, deepens selfawareness, and strengthens connection to intuition and spirit.

Dieting requires deep dedication, an assertive mindset and the passion to learn and empower yourself beyond your physical and mental limits. As practiced in traditional and ancient style of dieta, you will be in isolation and silence in a private tambo (jungle hut) abstaining from all contact with the outside world, from talking unecessarily, from sex/masturbtion, from foods with salt, sugar, fruits and oils.
It is required to dry fast for the first 48 hours, from once your dieta has been opened.
Thereafter, you continue fasting with water for as long as you can. Long term dietas require dry or water fasting every other day or during the time period when you are drinking the teacher plant medicine.

The fasting alows the body to absorb the spirit of the plant to ensure a strong connection. the spirits of the teacher plants and trees approach and converse with the dieter in silence, they share their gifts and teachings in the dream realm, in deep meditations and in the ceremonies of Ayahuasca.
You will be required to drink the extract of the teacher plant for 3 days on, 3 days off and so forth continued throughout the dieta. you will also be required to smoke Mapacho (sacred tobacco) in a pipe made of Noya Rao, Chullachaqui or Bobinsana wood depending on what you're dieting. (Pipes will be for sale from mokan rate center).
The pipe becomes your ally, protective tool and aid to connect to your dieta plant. Every 3rd day is a ceremony of Ayahuasca, the opportunity to connect deeper to your teacher plant and to practice singing icaros in ceremony under the Mareacion of Ayahuasca.
Ingestion of Dieta plant extract, being in periods of silence and isolation in your :

Dieters receive different plant baths for cleansing, protection, and inner illumination, amplifying their connection with the plant they are dieting. In the Shipibo tradition, plant baths are an important part of the dieta process and are used not only for physical cleansing but also for energetic alignment with the spirit of the plants.
Baths made from the Master plant that a person is dieting are often given to deepen the connection with that plant's intelligence and teachings. These baths help open the energetic channels so the dieter can receive the plant more fully in dreams, visions, and subtle awareness.
As the dieta approaches completion, protective plant baths are commonly used to close and seal the process. These baths help stabilize the energy of the Master plant within the body and protect the dieter while they transition back into everyday life.
There are also aromatic flower or Love Baths, prepared with fragrant plants and flowers. In Shipibo practice, these baths are believed to strengthen magnetism, attraction, beauty, good luck, and harmonious relationships. They uplift the spirit, brighten the energetic field, and help cultivate a sense of openness, joy, and connection. Together, these different plant baths form a key modality used by Shipibo curanderos to support the physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation that occurs during a dieta. In some cases, plant baths are done every day or every other day. They also cleanse on energetic, emotional, and psychic levels and can lead to profound shifts in health and consciousness on their own.

Sometimes called plant steam baths or jungle saunas, are a traditional Amazonian healing practice used to cleanse, purify and prepare the body before entering a plant dieta or receiving the medicine of a master plant. These therapeutic steam baths are prepared by boiling a selection of medicinal jungle plants and allowing their aromatic vapors and healing compounds to envelop the body. The warmth opens the pores, stimulates circulation and encourages the body to release toxins, tension and stagnant energies.
The baths often contain seven powerful medicinal plants, with the revered Cinco Médicos, meaning Five Doctors, forming the foundation of the preparation. These plants are deeply respected in Amazonian herbal traditions for their potent detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties.
Beyond their physical benefits vapor baths are also believed to support emotional and energetic cleansing. They are traditionally used to help restore balance in cases of trauma, anxiety, mental confusion, emotional heaviness and negative energetic influences. Through warmth, aromatic medicine and ritual intention the baths help bring the body and spirit into a state of openness, harmony and receptivity. In this way vapor baths serve as an important preparatory step, helping the body become clear, grounded and receptive before receiving the wisdom and healing of the master plants.

In the Shipibo healing tradition, purgatives are often given at the beginning of a treatment process to cleanse the body in preparation for receiving a dieta and other plant medicines. This purification helps remove physical toxins and energetic blockages so the body can receive the healing and teachings of the plants more clearly.
Shipibo curanderos work with a variety of purgative plants, each chosen for its specific medicinal properties and prescribed according to the individual's condition. Once the medicinal preparation is drunk, vomiting is usually induced by drinking large amounts of water. This process is considered an important cleansing of both the stomach and energetic field, helping remove toxins, parasites, and stagnant energies from the body.
The sap of Sangre de Grado (Croton lechleri), or Dragon's Blood, may be used in small amounts as a purgative. It is widely respected in Amazonian medicine for its ability to support healing of the digestive tract. It helps regenerate the stomach lining and intestinal walls and is traditionally used for ulcers, gastritis, and leaky gut, while also having antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. A tea made from Hierba Luisa (Cymbopogon citratus, lemongrass) is boiled and drunk to cleanse and soothe the stomach. This aromatic plant supports digestion, relieves gas and discomfort, and helps clear mucus and toxins from the digestive system.
The milky sap of the Ojé tree (Ficus insipida) is a well-known Amazonian antiparasitic medicine. It is traditionally used to eliminate intestinal parasites and deeply cleanse the digestive tract, and is administered carefully by experienced healers.
A decoction made from the boiled bark of the Cedro tree (Cedrela odorata) is used to cleanse the lungs, liver, and blood. Cedro is valued for its detoxifying and protective qualities, helping clear respiratory congestion, support liver function, and restore balance to the body. Through these purgative plants, Shipibo healers prepare the body for deeper healing, opening the system so the teachings and energies of the Master plants received during dieta can be integrated more fully.

Ayahuasca is a sacred Amazonian brew traditionally prepared from two powerful plants: the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, often called the Caapi or Yagé vine, and the leaves of Psychotria viridis, commonly known as Chakruna.
The Caapi vine contains natural compounds called harmala alkaloids, primarily harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine, which act as MAO inhibitors (MAOIs). These compounds temporarily inhibit the monoamine oxidase enzymes in the digestive system, allowing certain psychoactive compounds to remain active in the body. Beyond their biochemical function, these alkaloids are believed to have neuroprotective, therapeutic and mood-regulating effects on the brain and nervous system.
The Chakruna leaves contain DMT (dimethyltryptamine), a powerful naturally occurring psychedelic compound. When consumed on its own, DMT is normally broken down in the digestive tract. However, when combined with the Caapi vine, the MAO inhibitors prevent this breakdown, allowing the DMT to pass through the bloodstream and cross the blood–brain barrier where it becomes active and produces profound psychological, emotional and visionary experiences. Within Amazonian traditions Ayahuasca is regarded not simply as a medicine but as a teacher plant or master plant spirit, used for healing, introspection, spiritual insight and deep psychological transformation.

This retreat is an invitation to remember and embody spirit through the human form, and to listen deeply for the unique rhythm of your own becoming.
Through the container of dieta, sound, prayer, and somatic practice, participants are gently guided into the resonance field of the heart — awakening the heart-mind and its innate intelligence. As the heart softens and opens, perception begins to shift: from effort to listening, from fragmentation to coherence, from survival to soul-led presence.
This work supports the unfolding of one’s dharma — the remembrance of purpose, calling, and the singular path each soul is here to walk. By attuning to the subtle cognition of the heart, we begin to sense what is truly ours to carry, to offer, and to embody in this lifetime.

As emotional waters are cleansed and recalibrated, layers of unresolved experience held within the body — personal, ancestral, and multi-generational — are invited into release. Trauma stored in the cells, in the nervous system, and in the unconscious field gently loosens its grip, restoring clarity of attention and reopening pathways of intimacy with self, spirit, and life.
In this softened state of presence, we begin to perceive through the heart rather than the wounds of the past. The lens shifts — from trauma-shaped seeing to heart-based knowing. From here, a living relationship with the plant spirits can emerge. Participants attune to the mycelial intelligence of the forest — sensing the subtle tendrils, threads, and resonance of the plant network, and recognizing themselves as part of this vast, interwoven field of life.
Sound, song, and creative expression become tools of integration — anchoring spirit into matter, rooting consciousness into the body, and allowing what has been received to take form. Through deepening embodiment, spirit is no longer abstract or distant, but lived, felt, and carried through the breath, the voice, and the cells themselves.
